At its February 14, 2024 City Council meeting, the Moose Lake City Council voted to proceed with eliminating the Moose Lake Police Department and move forward with subcontracting for law enforcement services. The Council was subsequently presented with a potential petition from a resident to bring the issue to a vote and has consulted with the City Attorney. Not all questions relating to the City are permitted to be ordered to a vote and only authorized public questions may be ordered by petition. Per state statute, eliminating the city police department is not included as an authorized question. As the issue cannot be petitioned for a vote, Council action to eliminate the Moose Lake Police Department and subcontract law enforcement services remains effective.
